Light & Power

Mission Statement:

Lehighton Borough Light & Power will provide superior services by means of safety, responsiveness and initiative while maintaining a reputation for being a well-run utility with wise forward planning, to provide consistent and uninterrupted electrical services to the citizens and businesses in the Borough at an equitable cost and within a reasonable time frame and to promote a positive image and enhance public confidence in the municipal electric utility.

Lehighton Borough has owned and operated its own electric system since 1943. We purchase the power for the community at the wholesale level. The Borough purchases the electricity from American Municipal Power out of Columbus, Ohio. The Borough is responsible for the distribution system and utility billing. Our system consists of a substation where the power is transformed from 69,000 volts to 12,000 volts. We continuously upgrade our system to provide the best service and redundancy to our customers.

The Light & Power Department consists of the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, four Lineman and one part time ground helper. These employees are responsible for the maintenance of the power lines, upgrading lines, repairing outages, tree trimming, street lights, traffic signals, building electrical maintenance, park electrical maintenance and upgrades, holiday decorations and other duties.  All local electrical regulations can be found in the Chapter 205 of the Lehighton Borough Ordinances.

If you are experiencing a power outage, please contact the Light & Power staff at (610) 377-4005 during normal business hours and after hours/weekends/holidays contact the Carbon County Communications Center at (570) 325-9111. If you lose power to part of your home or business, please check your fuse box for blown fuses. The Lehighton Light and Power Department is not permitted to enter private residences if the outage is suspected to be an internal issue. The property owner will need to contact a private electrician.

The borough is now accepting credit card payments for paying your borough utility bill.

If you want to report a street light that has gone out, you need to call the Light & Power Department with the pole number (Gold plate on pole) and the location of the pole.

Electrical Permit Applications can be obtained in the utility billing office.
