Purchase and Sale of Electricity

We receive many questions about shopping from a different supplier. The Borough does the shopping for our customers at a wholesale level. When customers shop for a different supplier, that supplier will only offer KWH at a lower rate. Lehighton Borough purchases at an “all in” price per KWH.  Although a customer may find a lower rate per KWH, there will be separate charges for congestion, transmission, generation, etc. The Borough provides a set rate for electricity without the customer being responsible for the separate charges.  Our customers are charged one rate per KWH and a power purchase adjustment charge which will recover variations for variable costs. When the Borough saves, our customers save. When we see an adjustment, that cost is shared by all borough customers.

Lehighton Borough does the shopping to lock in a fixed rate for all consumption. In 2017, there was a minimal increase for the monthly customer charge. Otherwise, there has not been a residential electrical rate adjustment in a decade. Borough officials had recently completed a rate study with our engineers to determine the necessary increase to cover the costs of our portfolio change, personnel, equipment, upgrades and capital outlay. Effective July 1, 2021 all rate classes will see an increase of $0.018 per KWH.
