In 1943 Lehighton created it's own power company to distribute power, which is purchased in bulk from PPL. Today, Lehighton Borough purchases over 42 million KWH which is used by it's 3000 Borough customers.
Lehighton is one of 35 municipals that owns and operates it's own power and light department.
The sale of electric power within the Borough has permitted the Borough to the line on tax millage.
Lehighton's new sub-station is being built next to PPL sub-station at Skyline Drive in Franklin Township.
Lehighton currently buys power at 12000 volts and will be upgrading to 69000 volts when the new sub-station is finished. The new sub-station is scheduled to go online some time in June of 2002
